Fall 2011: J. Mendel

4 Nov

Mendel’s collection was inspired by tribal body art and the architect Jean Prouvé. I don’t really see this inspiration represented at all in the collection. There were structured felt coats which were beautiful, in neutrals and in dark colors.  In contrast, there were fabulous dyed fox fur coats with unusual cuts. That said, this didn’t radiate “J. Mendel” to me — the designer whose spring and fall collections have dominated the red-carpets for months wasn’t evident in this collection. The gowns were less exotic and less uniquely designed than in the past collections. These were simpler and they all followed a theme — satin, deep, royal colors and mixed materials pieced on each other. There were some in velvet and some in lace over the simple cuts. They were nice, and beautiful in some cases. But none were Oscar material — which was what I had anticipated.
