Fall 2011: Louise Gray

4 Nov

Calm yourselves my fashion loving friends. Before you launch into ravings about the insanity of this collection — do one thing for me. Ignore the ugly shoes and the combinations and look at the pieces themselves. Gray’s collections make Betsey Johnson look straight-edge, but the aspects that combine to make this rather insane looks are quite cool. For example, take the knits. They are all based on a simple idea and then taken to a new level — a simple red knit with a black sleeve, kinda cool. The red and grey striped knit with plaid sleeves — totally wearable if not paired with a nutso skirt. The blazer in the first look — bright colors, a lot going on, but I can totally see the potential in it. There is a lot to take from Gray’s collection and I think that it is actually very ingenious and remarkable the way that she can make these insane looks and you watch them come down the catwalk and go — oh, I get it. It’s a new kind of fashion, a bolder kind and certainly not one with wide-spread appeal but one that I think deserves a little credit.
