Spring 2012: Valentino

2 Dec

Valentino completely rehauled their image with this. I was supremely impressed by the way Piccioli and Chiuri broadened the horizon of Valentino without straying outside of their utterly feminine and intricately detailed genre. The leather with cut outs reminds me a lot of some recent Balmain pieces — I can’t find the collection that they are from but ADR wore one during PFW. Each piece was more structured as well — heavy shoulders and intricate designs that are stunning in their intensity and subtlety. The neons were completely new and there were a series of them. They were very Christopher Kane-esque and had the lace and sheer pieces in neon colors and a really unusual cut. These pieces were so typical Valentino despite the fact that they’re completely out of line with the usual style of the brand. While the long dresses were perfect for the brand and gorgeous in their elegance, my favorite piece must be the gray lace one with the black ribbon belt. It reeked of Valentino but was completely unusual, it was phenomenal. There is no clear direction for this collection nor is there a theme, both in the pieces and with the mood/inspiration board for the designers. Georgia O’Keefe and early 20th century were among the mess of inspirations — I don’t quite see how they factor in but it was a truly phenomenal collection. A brilliant signal to other designers who have found themselves within a niche that it is possible to still reinvent oneself within specific limitations.
