Spring 2012: Kimberly Ovitz

10 Feb

I am really a huge fan of Ovitz. I think that she has a huge impact on fashion although she does not really acknowledge it and is widely an unknown presence. I know this is a big deal to say — but I think she’s better than Alexander Wang with the deconstructed, luxe sportswear genre. Before the show, Ovitz described the collection to Style.com as “disaster versus relief, man versus nature” and with the earthquake in Japan fresh in her mind, Ovitz use Japanese influence in a really subtle way and interspersed nature within the collection with patterns such as the embers on black etc. There was a consistency to the collection, an ease and a transformation…the pieces in each color started off short and then got longer and more flowing, the White cropped top that started off the show transformed into a gorgeous flowing dress with such ease. While there was a repetitive and somber feeling to the collection it is still beautiful and moving and never once felt trite and as if there was more left to be desired.
