Fall 2012: Peter Som

11 Feb

A Peter Som collection without florals? Never thought the day would come. Compared to every other collection of Som’s that is vibrant and reeks of positivity, this collection was somber and calculating. It was beautiful nonetheless but it had a wildly different feel. “At the end of the day, everyone wants to feel strong and sexy,” which is so true and he created these amazing and unusual cuts. The beginning was ridiculously rough with the strange waxy, plastic like gauze business? What was that…like really? The wildly colored furs did much less for me but there were a bunch of mini dresses with the long trail in multiple colors and small bustles, the kind of marbled dresses and suits…They were just gorgeous. The question is what will happen next season? Will Som stick with what he’s good at and mastered and created a solid base of admirers with the vibrant, florals and peppy prints or switch and stick to this somber and edgy thing he has going? I love seeing designers successfully step out of their comfort zone and not waver, just immediately flourish in a new environment and that is exactly what Som did.
